NoMa & Old City Update

January 2019

My name is Robb Dooling and I am serving NoMa and Old City as the elected Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner (ANC) for the 6C06 district. I represent our area in DC government decision-making. I will share monthly neighborhood updates, which you can receive by emailing 6C06@anc.dc.gov with “subscribe” in the subject line, following @robbdooling on any major social media network, or visiting robbdooling.com/updates. The next full ANC 6C meeting is Wednesday, 2/13, at 7pm at 214 Massachusetts Ave NE.

Streets Market NoMa

Visit our neighborhood’s newest grocery store, bar, and and cafe – all in one – at 51 M St NE! So far, I have enjoyed fruit and waffles here and I look forward to more visits: http://streetsmarketcafe.com/.

Red Bear Brewing
DC’s only fully gay-owned brewery is on track for a February opening next to REI. Neighbors and I deeply appreciated preliminary visits to their brewery where we saw board games, an ample stage for folks hosting special events, and more.  You may follow their updates on Kickstarter and social media. They also are scheduled to present at our ANC’s Planning, Zoning, and Economic Development Committee on Wednesday, 2/6 at 6:30pm at 330 7th St NE.

Affordable Housing & 2 Patterson St NE
Housing is a human right. Mayor Bowser has challenged DC to build 36,000 new units by 2025 and our neighborhood’s continuing contributions are integral to this mission.  Our ANC recently sent a letter to the DC government regarding 2 Patterson St NE and asking for a DC subsidy to fund additional discounted units. UrbanTurf wrote a fabulous summary of the six competing proposals for this site. Some developers have committed to build a new park at North Capitol & N St NE.

Sustainable Transportation
Mayor Bowser now aims for a DC where everybody can get to work or school in less than 30 minutes. Join our ANC’s Transportation and Public Spaces Committee Thursday, 2/7 at 7pm at 700 2nd St NE regarding:

  • New Bikeshare Station: In January, our ANC voted to support a new Capital Bikeshare station near 8th & K St NE, inside the reclaimed portion of West Virginia Ave. We also voted to send a letter (forthcoming) to Councilmember Charles Allen asking for funding for a park in this space.
  • #FixFloridaAve: January saw three crashes at 6th & Florida Ave NE alone, including one where a truck driver hit a Deaf cyclist and another where a car driver hit a police officer who was on a bike. There were no fatalities, but this corridor needs short-term solutions in addition to the long-awaited DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) project. We will seek to recommend specifics at the aforementioned February 7 meeting.
  • K Street NE Road Diet: Our ANC, DDOT, and neighbors engaged in a January meeting on traffic-calming and bike lanes potentially coming to K Street NE this summer. The current plan includes a cycletrack from 1st St to 2nd St, bike lanes from 2nd St to 6th St, and full-time parking east of 6th St.

Alcoholic Beverage Licensing

  • Congratulations to Caroline Quat who is now representing our neighborhood on the ANC’s Alcoholic Beverage Licensing Committee! Former committee member Jason Starr and I reviewed many applicants and nominated Caroline through the full ANC in early January, and she received unanimous approval.
  • You can see all committee members at http://anc6c.org/committee-members/.
  • The next Alcoholic Beverage Licensing Committee meeting is Monday, 2/4 at 7pm at 700 2nd St NE.

Noise Complaints
DC announced a new number for police non-emergencies: call 311 and press #1 to report a noise complaint, such as illegal after-hours construction.
In addition, for any establishment serving alcohol:

Email me at 6C06@anc.dc.gov to check on any overnight construction permits.
