NoMa & Old City Update

February 2019

To paraphrase our Mayor Muriel Bowser, all of us are neighbors whether we’ve been here for five minutes or five generations. To all just learning about the Advisory Neighborhood Commission, welcome – even if you live in an apartment building like I do! The next full ANC 6C meeting is Wednesday, 3/13, at 7pm at 214 Massachusetts Ave NE.

“Ursula”

Red Bear Opens Saturday, March 9!

Celebrate #NoMaQueerBeer and support a local business at Red Bear Brewing’s soft opening on Saturday, March 9 at 4pm! I applaud the owners on their transparency and outreach to our neighborhood. Congratulations to Red Bear on finally opening. I cannot wait to visit often and I hope to see many of you there.

NoMa Civic Association

Neighbor Tiffany Aziz and I are attempting to create a NoMa Civic Association to advocate affordable housing and any other local issues neighbors wish to bring to the table. Our first meeting is slated for Tuesday, April 9 at 7pm. Contact us at tiffany.aziz@hotmail.com and 6C06@anc.dc.gov to learn more as we finalize the location and agenda (which I will also announce in my March newsletter). We are also pursuing the “Membership” criteria for the DC Federation of Civic Associations.

K St NE Road Diet

Our ANC voted unanimously to recommend a long-overdue road diet on K St NE by the DC Department of Transportation (DDOT). The plan supports major safety goals in implementing curb extensions (reducing pedestrian crossing distance) throughout the corridor and bike lanes from 1st St NE to 6th St NE.

In our city, the best way to reduce automobile congestion and free up driving space for people who need it the most is to give more public space to walking and biking. Eighty-six percent of NoMaBID residents commute car-free; induced demand, the 1st St NE cycletrack, and ample sidewalks/trails make a difference. I very much look forward to a more sustainable K St NE.

Crosswalk-Palooza

Councilmember Charles Allen is seeking volunteers for a Crosswalk-Palooza to paint crosswalks ourselves. Tactical urbanism, or grassroots improvements to public space, has exciting potential and I cannot wait to participate in this project. Contact Allen if interested.

Allen joined the February ANC meeting and answered questions, including on Vision Zero (the mayor’s initiative to achieve zero traffic deaths in DC by 2024): he plans to reintroduce a bill to require utility companies to repaint crosswalks within 24 hours of completing work. Capitol Hill Corner has a splendid write-up of Allen’s visit to ANC 6C.

Allen’s next open office hours are Friday, March 8 from 8-9:30am at Lot 38, 1001 2nd St SE

Captioning and Deaf / HoH Accessibility Bills

Thank you to Councilmember Allen for reintroducing two bills significant to our neighborhood’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. You may contact councilmembers to encourage them to pass the following bills and/or provide feedback.

Speak Up at the DC Council

The DC Council is now hosting performance oversight and budget hearings. Anybody can testify about the performance of any DC government agency; this may entail you praising your neighborhood library or asking for greater government support for local businesses.

You may read the testimonies I delivered – including NoMa and Old City issues – on the performance of both the DC Department of For-Hire Vehicles and the District Department of Transportation.
