Newsletter – September 2020

Hola, neighbors!

We have 49 days until the election (see 6A06 map here)! I loved meeting many of you outdoors and at the H Street Farmers Market. I will be there again this Saturday alongside my friends Keya Chatterjee running for ANC 6A01 (to our west) and Laura Gentile running for ANC 6A05 (to our south). All of us are advocating affordable housing and good environmental stewardship for this neighborhood.

You can request a free yard/window sign here. We are proud of hiring Deaf artist Daniel Katz-Hernandez and progressive Union shop Gibson Print to create this sign. Thank you to everyone who already put up a sign, donated, joined the mailing list, or contributed to this campaign in another way. We’re proud to have donations from #All8Wards of DC in this campaign!

If you are on any listservs, apartment building Facebook groups, or other networks with neighbors, I would love to send you a brief post to share on there as part of my virtual campaigning. If you’re willing to help with this, just let me know.

ANC 6A news:

  • In September’s monthly meeting, the current ANC heard comments on the police budget and voted to write a letter to the DC Council including residents’ thoughts. You can submit your comments on the police budget to your current commissioner before the October 8 meeting. I spoke on the budget (through an ASL interpreter) at 46:15 in the ANC meeting recording.
  • Mozzeria, the first Deaf-owned and Deaf-operated restaurant in DC, is now open in ANC 6A06 at 1300 H St NE! I created a video discussing how disability talent, immigrant talent, and other historically underrepresented talents will be significant in the future of the H Street Corridor. If you visit, I highly recommend the Salumi pizza (and ordering online and picking up pizza during a less busy time).
  • Sadly, our other neighbor Granville Moore’s is likely to close by the end of September. H Street Main Street, ANC 6A, and my group of safe streets advocates are all pushing for more outdoor space for restaurants on H Street, but the District Department of Transportation is asking restaurants to jump through many hoops to make it happen. We need the DC government to better support small businesses.
  • Our neighborhood Rosedale Library at 1701 Gales St NE is hosting a Mail Ballot Drop Box, giving us another option for voting. You can drop your mail ballot there anytime between October 5 and November 3 at 8:00pm. Register to vote and/or update/check your voter registration at DCBOE.org. DCBOE will mail ballots to every registered voter starting in October: read more at https://robbdooling.com/vote/ and see this terrific map for all voting options.
