Newsletter – October 2020

Hi neighbors!

We have 15 days until the election (see 6A06 map here)! Earlier this month, I was excited and honored to receive the endorsement of Greater Greater Washington (GGW). GGW is a progressive urban planning website and decided to endorse us based on my responses to their questions about COVID-19, affordable housing, sustainable transportation, and more. You can see all ANC 6A candidates’ responses here. I also published candidate statements in The Hill Rag, the League of Women Voters’ voter guide, and Barred in DC (a citywide blog by one of our own 6A06 neighbors).

A big thank you to campaign volunteers who have drawn colorful chalk messages on our neighborhood’s sidewalks. If you see these chalk messages, they beautifully portray what we stand for: safe streets, climate action, and even representing queer cat moms.

Volunteer opportunities:

  1. Hand out flyers outside of polling places to support all GGW-endorsed candidates in ANC 6A
  2. Write a chalk message on any sidewalk (just reply to this email with an address where we can drop free chalk. We encourage you to support other progressive candidates too!)
  3. Host a yard sign or window sign

I deeply appreciate everyone who already put up a sign, donated, joined the mailing list, made our neighborhood a bit more colorful with chalk, or contributed to this campaign in another way. We are especially proud to have donations from #All8Wards of DC and 16 U.S. states in this people-powered campaign.

ANC 6A news:

In October’s monthly meeting, the current ANC 6A voted to add “advisory bicycle lanes,” raised crosswalks, stop signs, and other traffic-calming measures to Tennessee Ave NE.  I advocated for these changes during the September Transportation and Public Spaces committee meeting. If you have more ideas for making Tennesse Ave safer, you can contact the current ANC and cc me.

DC Council candidate Ed Lazere, ANC 6A01 candidate Keya Chatterjee, and I protested at Union Station on Indigenous People’s Day. We advocated DC statehood, renaming Columbus Circle, and no new car parking spaces (prioritizing sustainable transportation) in the Union Station Redevelopment project. The massive Union Station redevelopment will shape the future of our neighborhood and you can read more about it here.

The Pie Shop DC now has a large bike rack in front, which replaced two parking spaces and makes it easier for neighbors to bike to their outdoor patio. I created a video explaining my background in advocating these types of changes and the future of public space on H Street. If you visit, I recommend their quiches!
